Project: Flemish Still Life Masters Copy

The Flemish painters of Northern Europe tried to do something very different with the Art of Still Life. They tried to capture time by showing perishable objects in the process of decay. Many of the paintings are macabre in nature due to the symbolism of death and decay that is portrayed.

The Student will Create a masters copy of a Flemish Still life in class to further practice the Skill of color matching, Composition, and Symbolism

On going Homework

In Drawing and Painting 2 we as student artist are required to complete four pages of Sketchbook work a week that deal with specific criteria.

Page 1: one will Draw from observation something in their everyday Environment in a study that composes the whole paper.

Page 2: One will collect Images of art that one likes and is attracted too.

Page 3: one will study Natural shapes in a composition.

Page 4: one will practice the skills covered in class at home.

All home work assignments will be graded on the first day of each week that the student attends class.

Project 2: Monochromatic Painting

Monochromatic paintings force the students to control not only the value of color but the colors intensity. Color Intensity is controlled through varying mixtures of colors and their complimentary hues to lessen the strength of the color thus dulling it down. For example if you were doing a painting only in shades of red and you wanted to dull the red used in the background so that it did not compete with the red of your focal point you would use green in your mixture to take away the intensity of the Background red.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to give the students more experience in higher order painting skills to build on the skills in D.P.1

RATIONALE: The objective of the course is to build drawing and painting skills that will be a continuation of the students growing Drawing and painting Skills. Thus preparing the Student for Advancement to Drawing and Painting III or AP 2D Portfolio.

TEXT: Discovering Drawing, by Ted Rose.

SUPPLIES AND MATERIALS: Students are responsible for bringing in the following supplies:
v 11x14 inch sketchbook
v Set of drawing pencils (HB – B6)
v Pencil sharpener
v Kneaded eraser

OPTIONAL:
v 2 XXL Black T-Shirts
v A personal Set of Brushes (Not to be shared with others)
v Personal Acrylic or oil Paints (for use in Home work and personal experimentation)

LAB FEE: All students are required to pay a $15.00 art fee that will cover the consumption of art materials and supplies.

A Note On Sketchbooks:

Sketchbooks are incredibly important in this classroom. Finished sketchbook Pages can be considered for your slides in your final Portfolio. A sketchbook is a place for Organization, Creativity, Imagination and an Artist’s personal notes. You will be required to complete 4 Pages of sketchbook exercises a week.

Day one: Look at the world around you.
Take a picture or draw something in your everyday life and write notes about what you see. Find other artists renderings of similar phenomenon and comment on the Comparison of the two. Or discuss how this makes you feel in poetry or prose.

Day two: Look for Images that move you. Seek out the work of other Artists and collect them. Try to sketch them out. Write about your observations. Collage multiple Images together on a page.

Day three: Admire Nature. Look at natural things. (Rocks, Trees, Animals, People, Water, clouds) Take the things of nature and create compositions with their shapes, or study the Anatomy of a tree. Collect leaves and glue them in to your books and try to draw their veins.

Day four: plan your next move. This is a class where you are going to be working on multiple projects at the same time. Organize your self. Plan Ahead. Sketch out possible scenarios.

First Semester:
First Quarter: Still Life.

Second Quarter: Landscape
1. Gray Scale Landscape.
2. Visualizing Landscapes.
a. Day Landscapes
b. Night landscape
3. Archetectual Landscapes.
a. Mixing natural and man made elements.

Midterm examinations: The Midterm Examination will consist of a multiple-choice test that will demonstrate their understanding of the skills Learned during the first semester.
Second Semester:
Third Quarter: Figural & Narrative Painting

1. Gray Scale Portrait.
2. Monochromatic Portrait
3. Mixing Flesh Tones
4. Chiaroscuro (Strong Light sources)
5. Body Language Using the Body to Narrate an emotion or action
Fourth Quarter: Mixed Media.
1. Drawing Over Paint
2. Incorporation of Collage and Painting.
3. Building up a three dimensional Surface for painting.
4. Creation Of a final project Worth 40% of Final Semester Grade.
Final Examination will consist of a cumulative multiple-choice examination of terms and techniques covered in the class.

HOME LEARNING - PROJECTS – CRITIQUES:

Home Learning: Students will be required to produce 3 pages of studies in their sketchbook each week. At the end of each month, students are expected to have completed 10 personal studies and 2 master’s copies.

Projects: Students will be working on multiple projects to scaffold skills.

Critiques: Critiques take a major role in the drawing and painting class. Critique participation is key to the evaluation of student work. Students MUST participate in every critique. Critiques add to the student ability to communicate ideas in the classroom.

LATE OR LOST WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

CLASS RULES:

v Come to class and get here on time.
v Come to class prepare. Always have your SKETCHBOOK.
v Listen carefully and follow instructions.
v Use safety in the classroom. Be attentive with sharp tools.
v Respect the point of view from other students and the teacher.
v Respect materials and equipment in the classroom.
v Follow the Code of Student Conduct.

DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES:

v 1st offense – VERBAL WARNING
v 2nd offense – DETENTION
v 3rd offense – Referral to administrator for further disciplinary action.

Detentions are given with the full support of the Administration and will be served. You will be notified in writing if you receive a detention. Your parents will be responsible for making alternate transportation arrangements.
